Validator set and the BFT budget

Mysticeti starts from a fixed validator set. With four validators, the protocol can tolerate one Byzantine validator.

Fault budget

f = 1

• The formula is N = 3f + 1, so N = 4 gives f = 1.
• A decision needs 2f + 1 validators, which is 3 of 4 in this tutorial.
• The grey validator is not necessarily bad; it is the amount of fault budget the protocol must survive.
